Dry Cleaner

DRY CLEANER

Scope

A prominent bank engaged GeoTech to remediate dry cleaning solvent contamination at a former dry cleaner site in a busy high retail district of Broward County, Florida.

Challenge

An in situ chemical reduction (ISCR) remedy was implemented to address chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) contamination associated with a source release area and the resulting large dilute 4,000 ft long plume.

Design, Construction, & Operation

Onsite and off-site impact characterization was performed under the direct supervision of GeoTech and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). The investigation identified an area impacted by constituents of concern (COC) that were detected in the soil and groundwater up to a 1000 feet radius of the source area. The saturated soil was initially the principal source of COC impacts to the groundwater, which were removed. A bioremediation pilot injection program was proposed and implemented in the plume area. Following the successful pilot test implementation and additional site characterization activities, full-scale injections were performed both on-site and off-site.

RESULT

Remedial action, combined with naturally occurring processes, were effective in achieving the goal reductive dichlorination VOC concentration of 140,000 ug/L to less than 3 ug/L where the site transitioned to Natural Attenuation Monitoring and subsequently to a No Further Action (NFA) and a Site rehabilitation Completion Order from FDEP.

DURATION

16 months, SRCO/NFA achieved in 18 months.
