Water and Wastewater Treatment Case Study
Abstract
SmurfitStone Container Corporation (SSCC), a cardboard manufacturing company, retained GeoTech for the purpose of designing and constructing a new, more efficient, and environmentally acceptable wastewater treatment system. In order to meet the needs of the recent plant growth and increasing cardboard manufacturing, SSCC needed an upgraded treatment system that could handle processing 2500 gallons of wastewater per day. The starch preparation unit was also not functioning properly due to the use of recycled water. SSCC decided to begin using fresh water for starch preparation. Consequently, SSCC needed to dispose of the treated wastewater into the city sewer system. GeoTech was selected to install a new wastewater system that would process at least 2500 gallons of wastewater per day and obtain the necessary permits that would allow SSCC to release their treated water into the city sewer system.
Discussion and Conclusion
GeoTech Engineers mobilized to the site and conducted a visual property inspection and observed the manufacturing process and facility operations of SSCC. GeoTech observed that the treated water was re-used in the process of starch preparation and collected in a 500-gallon holding tank. The sludge which contained low heavy metals was collected in waste construction boxes and hauled offsite by an Industrial Waste Service and disposed of at the city landfill. GeoTech designed a new wastewater treatment system that would be able to treat and process 2500 gallons per day from the boilers, corrugators, ink presses and starch unit, and be environmentally safe to dispose into the city sewer system. GeoTech proceeded to obtain the necessary construction permits and install the new wastewater treatment system. GeoTech also obtained an industrial waste permit that would allow SSCC to dispose of the treated water into the city sewer system. All work was conducted in accordance to all local, county, state, and federal regulations, and under GeoTechs Engineering Lisences. This wastewater treatment system upgrade, designed and constructed by GeoTech, is still being used by SSCC today.
