Phase III Remediation
Abstract
Levy Realty Advisors, Inc. retained GeoTech to conduct a Phase III Remediation Action Plan (RAP) on their facility in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. This facility, a former Dry Cleaning Maintenance and Repair facility, stored dry cleaning machines outside without previous decontamination. These machines were left for an extended period of time exposed to the elements, specifically rain, which posed a great threat to the soil and groundwater onsite. A previous site assessment identified hazardous wastes (lint, separator water, waste product, etc.) contaminated with tetrachloroethylene (PCE), a common compound used in dry cleaning solvents. GeoTech's services included: design and implementation of a RAP to remediate the site of all contaminants, specifically PCE; and monthly and quarterly sampling of groundwater (and soil, if necessary) to verify the effectiveness and progress of the proposed RAP.
Discussion and Conclusion
GeoTech identified the principal aquifer system on site to be the surficial aquifer system. Therefore, time was critical, and made GeoTech's immediate response and efficiency crucial in order to prevent the aquifer from being further contaminated. GeoTech mobilized to the site to begin Remedial Action. All hazardous materials and equipment were decontaminated, removed, and disposed of. GeoTech then designed a RAP that would speed up the natural attenuation process of PCE through the use of full scale in-situ bioremediation using Hydrogen Release Compounds (HRC). This compound functioned as an effective agent in stimulating anaerobic degradation of chlorinated solvents, such as PCE. The HRC was pumped into specific soil and groundwater locations on site designated as critical points. Groundwater sampling was conducted regularly to monitor the progress of the RAP. With treatment, all contamination concentration levels successfully dropped within acceptable Soil and Groundwater Cleanup Target Levels (CTLs). After interpreting all of the necessary data and running the appropriate calculations, GeoTech concluded that the site no longer posed any threat to human health or any risk to the environment. GeoTech was granted their request for No Further Action (NFA) from the proper authorities, and further site assessments and/or remedial actions were not warranted.
